Loose dentures can be the worst dental problem to have. The movement will often restrict what you can eat and cause you to loose confidence in social situations.
What’s the problems with Loose Dentures?
Dentures “false teeth” rely on support from your remaining teeth and jaw bone in the mouth. The support for your dentures reduces significantly as you loose more teeth and as jaw bone shrinks away naturally over time following the loss of a tooth.
Once you have lost most of all of your teeth for a few years, there is support for your dentures making them very loose. This movement can often cause those embarassing moments of your teeth “dropping” or “moving” when you are with friends and family.
The movement will also make it difficult for you to eat the foods you would want to eat. Instead you will often need to select soft and “mushy” foods that do not require a lot of chewing or force to eat.
What is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small metal post that can be used to help give your denture stability and to even replace your denture completely if this is desired.
As little as 3 dental implants can be used to dramatically change the stability of your denture allowing it to stay in place and eat all the foods you would like to (instead of the foods you have to).
How long does it take?
Placing a dental implant is a small procedure peformed under local anaesthetic that takes around 30 minutes. It is normally left under under gum for at least 10-12 weeks before they can be used to support your denture.
Long Lasting
The major difference between an implant denture over a standard denture, is that an implant denture has multiple fixation points to your mouth.
Stable
This makes the teeth very stable allowing you to eat anything you want without the teeth moving or slipping, and to socialise without the fear or your teeth “dropping” out.
Removable
The visual appearance of the teeth can be fantastic and you can also remove the teeth allowing you to fully clean your mouth easily.
Can I get rid of my dentures completely?
Yes you can. Implants can be used to support rows of teeth (bridges) that are fully fixed and do not require removal. You would normally require 4-6 implants in each jaw to support 10-12 missing teeth. The teeth will be made of porcelain giving you the closest feel to having your own natural teeth again.

What are the alternative options?
The only alternative is to use denture adhesive (eg. Polygrip or fixodent) which help stabilise and support your standard dentures. Depending on how well the denture fits, these can offer you stability for 4-8 hours. It is important to remove all the adhesive from your mouth and denture before you go to sleep at night which can be difficult and time consuming.
